The guide to wearing purple

From periwinkle puffa jackets to winter maxis in rich magenta and wine hues,

purple reigned on the AW16 catwalks. If lilac and lavender are too sickly for
your fashion palette, fret not, there are entry points into autumn’s biggest
colour trend. Try a mulberry-hued bag or pops of amethyst on jewellery, before
building up your confidence and clashing your purples with prints.

Whatever shade you plump for, here are four ways to work purple in your new
season wardrobe without looking like you've just walked off the Cadbury's
production line.

Winter blooms

Update summer maxi dresses for long-sleeved floor sweepers littered with
romantic florals in deep plums and mauves. Suede and velvet accessories will add
to this rich look.

Not-so-crazy cat lady

Felines have usurped leopard as the animal print to wear now. Clash skirts
with purple knits and jewelled trophy earrings for an eccentric day look.
Alternatively, purple trinkets or accessories will add a louche element to
leopard print shirts.

Pyjama drama

The pyjamas-as-daywear trend is still going strong. If you haven't bought
into the matchy-matchy look, remember that you can wear the purple pieces as
separates too. Elevate the louche look with low-heeled loafers and handbags with
gold hardware for evening, but interchange the shirt and trousers with plain
wardrobe basics for day.

Get down

Puffa jackets might be the coat of the season, but make sure you don’t lose
your silhouette under all that quilting. Wear with an A-line skirt and metallic
ankle boots in the city, or slim-cut checked trousers for a modern take on the
heritage trend for weekends in the country.
