Foods to eat for healthy skin

Beauty starts from the inside, so treat your body to healthy foods for
glowing skin.

We all aim to have a healthy, glowing complexion, which is why we search for
the perfect beauty products to help us achieve that look. However, getting
luminous skin doesn't just come from the outside - it starts from the inside as
well. Research has proven that your diet affects your complexion, and over time,
may help to significantly improve the quality of your skin. Food gets broken
down into vitamins, minerals and amino acids that your body uses to enhance
healthy skin, but if you're putting highly processed foods into your body, your
skin won't be as strong as it can be. So in addition to all the products you
layer on the skin, here are some tasty treats to help you look beautiful inside
and out.

Chocolate

Cocoa contains high levels of flavanols, which are plant compounds with
antioxidant properties that help hydrate skin and improve circulation. Pick up
chocolate that's at least 70 per cent cacao, and by eating a couple of square a
day, you can improve luminosity without the weight gain.

Sunflower seeds

A handful of this snack contains a tonne of Vitamin E, which enhances your
immunity and subsequently fights off the inflammation that leads to acne. In
addition, sunflower seed oil can give your body a high essential fatty acid
content, which also helps hydrate dry body parts such as lips and heels.

Soy

Soy helps create an overall clearer complexion thanks to its mineral and
protein content, found in foods such as tofu, soy milk or soybeans. It can help
stop collagen from breaking down, which is what leads to sagging and lines. Soy
can also reduce hyperpigmentation, where patches of skin become darker in colour
than the surrounding skin.

Artichoke

Surprisingly, these vegetables are used frequently in herbal skin products
due to their high antioxidant potency. When eaten directly your skin's
luminosity can improve, and better yet, digestion is made better while also
boosting the immune system.

Squash

Pumpkin, acorn and butternut squashes are all rich in beta-carotene. Your
body turns the beta-carotene into Vitamin A, which helps normalise oil
production in the skin and in turn helps keep skin soft and smooth. It also
fights off pimples and inflammation.
