How to wear pigtails
Pigtails are everywhere on the Fashion Month runway, from Miu Miu and Chanel
to Marni and Mara Hoffman. And lately, they've been spotted on FKA twigs,
Janelle Monae and Alexa Chung, prompting the question: Can non-model types wear
them while still looking like legit adults?
Cutesy-ness aside, they're a perfectly practical option for summer. The key
is to wear them low, at the shoulders, with interesting accessories elevating
the look from primary school staple to high-fashion polish.
Greasy hair? Turn them into sleek pigtails like the ones at Marni. To create
the layered look seen at the show, divide each pony into three parts and secure
the centre one at the nape of the neck before criss-crossing the side sections
over it. Secure with pins and spritz with Bumble and Bumble's Spray de Mode to
secure.
At Mara Hoffman, the hippie-at-heart, Americana-themed collection channelled
country legend Willie Nelson – and it was perfectly complemented by the
hairstyles and soundtrack. Models sported Willie's trademark braids as they
walked the runway to the iconic singer covering Ella Fitzgerald's classic, 'Blue
Skies'. The show's artistic director Richard Mannah said, "We tried a few
different braids, but Mara wanted it really simple and stripped back. It's close
to something Willie would do!"
Since we can't afford the real thing, recreate the look by prepping long hair
(models were given 30-inch extensions) with John Frieda Luxurious Volume Mousse
for extra grip before blow-drying it straight. Make a clean centre part then
create a basic three-strand braid on either side before applying Tigi Bed Head
Wax Stick to errant flyaways. And finish the look with a headscarf over the
plaits, having it cover the plaits and touch the tips of your earlobes.
At Chanel, Kendell Jenner opened the elaborate airline-themed show with two
low ponytails attached with a silver bow clip. If playing at home, try an
oversized barrette like this ridged metallic one by ASOS. "Everyone has a single
ponytail. Better to have two than one, no?" designer Karl Lagerfeld told AnOther
magazine of the pigtail look.
At Miu Miu, models wore tight and low pigtails with punky Alice headbands –
or metal flower crowns – adding to the schoolgirl vibes. Remember, low is the
way to go! Lest you wind up in Pippi Longstocking or Harley Quinn territory.
Lightly mist your pigtails with Klorane Gentle Dry Shampoo and rub with your
fingers slightly for that messy-on-purpose texture. Working with third day
unwashed locks will also do the trick!
Though previous flirtations with adult pigtails have resulted in combing out
our efforts after one glance in the mirror, these four cases may just be enough
to convince us.
