Bogus products damaged Nanette Lepore’s fashion brand

When designer Nanette Lepore sought to expand her brand, she wanted clothes
ready to wear — not ready to fall apart.

Lepore, whose tops and dresses are favored by Sarah Jessica Parker, Taylor
Swift and Michelle Obama, partnered with Bluestar Alliance to grow her business
but now claims in a Manhattan federal lawsuit that the brand-management firm
actually diminished it.

Among her complaints: luggage with allegedly carcinogenic chemicals was sold
to Burlington Coat Factory, and zippers and buttons broke easily.

Bluestar inked its deal with Lepore in 2014 but tried to fire her just weeks
later, she claims in her suit against the firm. She argues that she was supposed
to be kept on as creative director.

And she was allowed to give creative input on the goods — including clothes,
luggage, sunglasses and shoes — only at the end of the process as “a mere
formality,” Lepore said.

Bluestar has “destroyed the integrity of the Nanette Lepore brands and
Lepore’s long-established good will with her customers, retailers and
licensees,” the suit says.

Bluestar has let its licensees “manufacture foreign-made, inferior and
defective products,” Lepore charged in court papers. “Sadly, Lepore has received
numerous complaints about Bluestar’s shoddy products bearing her name that
quickly fall apart or, even worse, pose health risks to consumers.”

Lepore accuses Bluestar of breach of contract and seeks more than $735,000
damages.

Bluestar says the deal has been “extremely lucrative” for both sides and
called the allegations “baseless.”
