how to look chic in a raincoat
London Fashion Week street style has taught us how to look chic in a
raincoat
In a cruel twist of fate the Great British Summer Time officially ended on
the first day of London Fashion Week. The downpour was so heavy that we were
forced to reevaluate our umbrella etiquette (gasp!).
Thankfully, Londoners are hardy folks and well-equipped to deal with such
miserable weather. Rather than flounder in strappy sandals, showgoers strode out
in sensible footwear and raincoats. Yes, macs, anoraks and trenches turned into
the unlikely hero pieces of day one of London Fashion Week .
Here’s how to look chic in your own waterproofs as autumn becomes a
reality...
Classic khaki colours will never date
Navy and beige macs are fine, but khaki coloured coats add a utilitarian air
to outfits. Just like the lightweight, military-inspired jackets you have been
living in all summer, a khaki anorak makes a great contrast to ladylike
ensembles underneath, or heightens the androgynous look you might also be
embracing. A win-win in our books.
Don’t hide your outfit underneath
Naturally you’ll zip up during the drizzle, but you don’t have to hide behind
your waterproof at all times. Enjoy a fluidity to your look by undoing your mac
and letting it trail after you. This will also frame whatever you are wearing
underneath. Try a patterned dress, like Caroline Issa’s dotty blue midi, to make
real impact against the grey skies.
Patterned macs can look cool
Printed anoraks have a bad rep for looking naff, because, quite frankly, the
majority do. But thanks to Dolce & Gabbana and Burberry’s floral trench
coats the fashion industry has slowly come to accept them again. The key is to
pare the rest of your look down underneath and let the mac do all the hard work.
Avoid ditsy prints and go bold, there’s no beginner’s way to tackle this
look.
Don’t wash out your silhouette
Unless you’re on an outdoor expedition when space saving is important, you
don’t need to wear a pac-a-mac. They have no shape whatsoever, and will only
hide your frame. Instead opt for a structured jacket that fits around the
shoulders and falls at a flattering point on your legs.
